Our Nest Box

The Kestrel Box - an Arizona Non-Profit Corporation

Latest Picture from the Nest BoxHere is a picture of the outside the nest box that the camera is mounted in.  We are using an experimental design with double walls on the sides and double ceilings with air spaces between the outer and inner walls/ceiling.  The hope is to provide a slightly cooler environment for the birds.  We think it helped during 2001 as a second clutch was attempted, but since the second clutch failed we think it still got too hot.

The camera is housed in the small box in the space between the roof and the ceiling of the box.  We are using a low-light black and white video camera with no light source other than the natural light that makes it in through the opening.

[View of the Tree]Here is a view of the tree where our box is placed (this picture is of the old box that was removed after one too many beehives moved in).  Our new box is in roughly the same place.  It is about 20 to 25 feet up in the air and we depend on a 32 foot ladder to reach it.
